Never Again! United Youth Conference Against War

New York: United Youth Conference Against War, 1932. A conference document for the inaugural United Youth Conference Against War, which was held at the Rand School of Social Science in NYC from November 25-27, 1932. The internal pages include a Call to Action by Nathaniel Weyl (temporary chairman) and Paul Porter (secretary) and the conference agenda. The rear page includes information on Special Interest Group Meetings, Basis for Selection of Delegates, Organizations Sponsoring the UYCAW and the conference officers. Conference speakers included Roger Baldwin, J. B. Mathews, Norman Thomas, Arthur Garfield Hays, Reinhold Niebuhr, and others.

The Resolutions Committee concluded the conference by announcing a united front against the war, although it was less than united according to the New York Times coverage of a factional dispute between Socialists and Communists (Nov. 28, 1932 issue). Interestingly, Nathaniel Weyl, one of the conference’s main organizers, later became an avowed anti-Communist, conservative, and racialist as did another of the conference’s speakers, J. B. Mathews.

Large sheet folded (12” x 9”), illustration by Art Young to the cover. Horizontal crease from folding, closed tears to fold, edgewear. One copy in OCLC at Swarthmore. Item #9832
