An Appeal to all Germans, German-Americans, Austrians and Hungarians

[Hartford, Conn.]: German American Alliance, [1915]. An announcement for a fundraising bazaar held from Jan. 25 - Jan. 30, 1916 at the Park Casino, Elm Street in Hartford, the proceeds of which was to be donated to orphans and widows in Germany, Austria, and Hungary who were suffering privations due to the war.

The German American Alliance was part of the federation of ethnic German organizations known as the Deutschamerikanischer National-Bund (National German-American Alliance), whose logo can be seen in the upper lefthand corner. The NGAA was founded in Philadelphia in 1901 to promote German culture and at its peak in 1916 had a membership of approximately 2.5 million. With the rise of anti-German sentiment following the U.S.’s entry into the war in 1917, the NGAA was criticized for war relief efforts such as this one, for advocating neutrality and for resisting anti-prohibition efforts. In 1918, Congress revoked their charter, which President Wilson signed into law, but the organization had already dissolved.
