The Mechanics of Race Mongrelization: A New Fantastic Discovery (Closer Up, Special Supplement, January 10, 1958)

[Palm Beach, Florida]: Closer Up, 1958. A ‘Special Supplement’ of the far right newsletter founded by Upton Close (b. Josef Washington Hall) and edited by Don Bell, which focuses on the mechanism of heredity and the molecular differences between the races. The mutation that causes sickle cell anemia is used as evidence of these differing molecular structures and as proof “that the people of the South who are fighting integration are on solid scientific ground.” The authors admit that although there is still much unknown, “this we do know: whenever we scramble what God has put together, there is trouble.” The two interior pages compare the long chemical chain of normal blood (hemoglobin A) and the chemical chain of Negro blood (hemoglobin S) with inherited sickle cell anemia. The rear page reprints two photomicrographs showing red blood cells of the two differing conditions.

A single sheet folded printed in black and green, 4 p., illus. Two horizontal folds for mailing. Item #8560
