Unfair to Young People: How the Public Schools Got the Way They Are
Ann Arbor, Michigan: Youth Liberation Press / Wisconsin Alliance, 1975. A radical critique of the American public school system from a socialist and youth liberation perspective, examining the historical development of compulsory education and its relationship to capitalism, corporate power, and the socialization of young people. Published jointly by the Ann Arbor-based Youth Liberation Press and the Wisconsin Alliance, the pamphlet grew out of Peterson's involvement in the Wisconsin Student Union and his subsequent work with the Wisconsin Alliance, a socialist organization active in labor, community, and student organizing.
Organized into three principal sections—"Yesterday," "Today," and "Tomorrow"—the pamphlet traces the development of American public education from its early history through the rise of industrial capitalism, arguing that ostensibly progressive educational reforms frequently served the needs of employers and the state rather than students. Peterson examines the origins and functions of educational tracking, junior high schools, student government, political indoctrination, and compulsory attendance, contending that public schools have historically emphasized obedience, punctuality, competition, and conformity in preparation for participation in a hierarchical economic system. Additional sections address sexism, racism, the treatment of gay youth, the suppression of student rights, the economic interests underlying educational policy, and the failures of conventional reform movements. The concluding chapters advocate a socialist alternative emphasizing democratic participation and education organized around human needs rather than private profit. Includes footnotes, an appendix, and an extensive bibliography of radical educational and political literature.
