Fundraising appeal endorsing Eugene McCarthy's antiwar Presidential campaign

Cambridge, MA: McCarthy for President, [1968]. An unusual political fundraising appeal jointly issued in the names of Coretta Scott King, civil rights activist and wife of Martin Luther King Jr., and H. Stuart Hughes, historian, peace activist, and former U.S. Senate candidate, urging financial support for Senator Eugene McCarthy's 1968 Democratic presidential campaign. Condemning President Lyndon Johnson's prosecution of the Vietnam War, the authors argue that ending the conflict is essential to addressing America's intertwined crises of racial injustice, poverty, and urban deterioration. They praise McCarthy's willingness to challenge Johnson directly through the Democratic primaries and appeal for contributions to help overcome the considerable financial and political resources of the incumbent administration.

An interesting document of the intersection of the civil rights and antiwar movements during the tumultuous 1968 presidential election, particularly notable for Coretta Scott King's association with McCarthy's insurgent candidacy and the explicit connection drawn between ending the Vietnam War and advancing domestic racial and economic justice. Issued before the March 12, 1968 New Hampshire Democratic primary and thus preceding Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination on April 4, the appeal documents Coretta Scott King's antiwar political activity during the final weeks of her husband's life.
