Racism, the Student Movement and the Student Strike

[New England]: [Joint Executive, New England District Youth Clubs, Communist Party, U.S.A.], [ca. 1968]. A position paper issued by the New England District Youth Clubs of the Communist Party addressing racism within the predominantly white student antiwar movement and calling for a closer political alliance between black student organizations and the emerging campus strike movement. The authors argue that American universities perpetuate racial inequality through discriminatory admissions, unequal educational opportunities, corporate investments, and participation in military and government research. Statistical tables detailing black college enrollment in 1964–1965 accompany criticism of the disproportionately limited educational opportunities available to African Americans.

The document sharply criticizes Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and other predominantly white radical organizations for failing to incorporate black students' struggles into their organizing. Citing the prosecution of five Texas Southern University students following a violent police intervention on campus, it proposes eight measures for the student strike movement, including equal black and white representation on strike committees, allocation of at least half of organizing funds to black student organizing, exposure of university ties to racism and imperialism, opposition to the Institute for Defense Analyses, increased black enrollment and faculty appointments, and expanded black history curricula. The statement concludes by recommending the slogan adopted at the New Politics Convention in Chicago: “FOR FREEDOM AND PEACE!!!”
