[Azbuka russkogo natsionalista; The ABC of a Russian Nationalist]

Moscow: Slovo-1, 1994. The ideological manifesto of Aleksandr Barkashov's Russian National Unity (RNE), one of the most prominent militant ultranationalist movements to emerge from the political upheaval following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Collecting articles originally published in RNE's Russkii poriadok between 1992 and 1994, Barkashov's ABC of a Russian Nationalist sets forth a program of authoritarian Russian ethnonationalism opposed both to Soviet communism and the liberal, Western-oriented political and economic order emerging under Yeltsin. Essays address Russian national identity and unity, perestroika, the movement's black-shirt symbolism, the “metaphysics” of Russian nationalism, religion and ethnicity, nationalism versus patriotism, and the construction of a Russian national state. Published in 1994, immediately following RNE's participation in the violent constitutional crisis of October 1993, the volume is an important primary document of the radical nationalist and neo-fascist currents that accompanied Russia's turbulent post-Soviet transition.
