"We've Reached Era of Judicial Tyranny": An Address by Senator James O. Eastland of Mississippi before the Statewide Convention of the Association of Citizens' Councils of Mississippi Held in Jackson December 1, 1955
Greenwood, Mississippi: Association of Citizens' Councils of Mississippi, [ca. 1957]. First edition. An important early statement of Massive Resistance, reproducing Mississippi Senator James O. Eastland’s address to the first statewide convention of the Association of Citizens’ Councils of Mississippi, December 1, 1955. Eastland denounces Brown v. Board of Education as an exercise of “judicial tyranny” and calls for a coordinated Southern campaign employing state legislation, litigation, congressional action, public funds, and organized public opinion to preserve segregated schools. He attacks the NAACP, churches, liberal organizations, and major philanthropic foundations as participants in a well-financed campaign for integration, while praising the rapidly expanding Citizens’ Councils as the organizational model for resistance.
