Item #15229 NACLA Research Methodology Guide

NACLA Research Methodology Guide

New York / Berkeley: North American Congress on Latin America, 1970. A manual for conducting “power-structure research,” prepared by NACLA to help New Left organizers expose the institutional networks underlying American political and economic power. Rejecting the view of corporations, government agencies, universities, foundations, labor organizations, and the media as separate entities, the guide teaches researchers to trace the individuals, finances, contracts, and interlocking relationships connecting them.

Beginning with “Ten Theses on Power Structure Research,” the pamphlet offers instruction in identifying elites, locating documentary sources, using trade journals and professional directories, conducting interviews, and obtaining information from reluctant institutions. Separate chapters address political parties, corporations, the communications industry, organized labor, the military-industrial-academic complex, police, churches, and health care. A concluding section applies these methods to imperialism and the study of underdeveloped countries.

Stapled, illustrated wrappers (11” x 8 ½”), 72 pp., illustrated. A fine copy. Item #15229
