Chicago: Solidarity Bookshop, [1971]. The second in a series of six anarchist calendars designed by peace and civil-rights activist Tor Faegre and published by Chicago’s Solidarity Bookshop beginning in 1968. Each month combines an eclectic historical image or photograph with a hand-lettered calendar recording anniversaries drawn from anarchist, labor, revolutionary, civil-rights, and radical cultural history.
The calendar reflects Solidarity Bookshop’s characteristically expansive anarchism, joining the classical libertarian tradition with the IWW, international labor struggles, Black liberation, anti-colonial revolt, surrealism, and the contemporary New Left. Its inventive mixture of historical reproductions, radical photography, calligraphy, varied paper stocks, and cooperative printing exemplifies the handmade visual culture cultivated by the bookshop and its circle.
Founded by Chicago anarchists and surrealists, Solidarity Bookshop served simultaneously as a bookstore, publishing project, meeting place, and center for recovering suppressed revolutionary history. More than a practical calendar, Faegre’s production offered a counter-history of rebellion in which the anniversaries of strikes, uprisings, assassinations, and radical births replaced the conventional civic and religious observances of the commercial calendar. A scarce and visually compelling artifact of Chicago’s anarchist culture at the close of the 1960s.
