Chile: A Call for Solidarity

Madison, WI: Community Action on Latin America (CALA), [197-]. A two-sided flyer published shortly after the September 1973 military coup that overthrew Chilean president Salvador Allende. Directed toward an American left-wing audience, it summarizes the reforms of Allende’s Popular Unity government, condemns the role of American corporations, the CIA, and organized labor interests in destabilizing Chile, and describes the imprisonment, torture, and execution of the junta’s political opponents. It calls upon readers to oppose U.S. aid to the Pinochet regime, demand freedom for political prisoners and admission of Chilean refugees, and support the Chilean resistance.

The recto features illustrations from the Danish Rode Mor collective depicting an “Allende Vive” demonstration, the CIA manipulating Pinochet as a puppet, and military violence against civilians, accompanied by an appeal in English and Spanish to organize before “a wall of silence” descends. Issued by Madison’s Community Action on Latin America from material supplied by NICH–Berkeley, the flyer documents the rapid emergence of a national solidarity network linking local New Left organizations with Chilean anti-junta forces. A compelling artifact of the U.S. left’s efforts to expose American complicity in the coup and mobilize support for resistance to the Pinochet dictatorship.
