A principal text of The Work, the apocalyptic Christian cult led by Julius Schacknow (1924–1996), a Brooklyn-born Jewish convert and fundamentalist preacher known to his followers as Brother Julius. After announcing at a Connecticut revival in 1970 that he was Jesus Christ reincarnated, Schacknow gathered several hundred followers in New Jersey and central Connecticut, eventually claiming to be God and styling himself the “Sinful Messiah.”
Written anonymously in the first-person voice of Jesus, Walk With Me combines the four Gospels and the opening chapter of Acts into a single chronological narrative rendered in what its publishers termed “modern English.” The introduction, dated August 21, 1974 and signed “The Anointed Publishers,” claims that the book was distilled from a ten-year project comprising some 4,000 manuscript pages. Its deliberately personal presentation—Jesus recounting “my life” directly to the reader—gave literary expression to Schacknow’s claim that Christ had returned in his person.
An uncommon and unusually substantial primary document of an American charismatic cult, combining Gospel harmonization, private-press religious publishing, and the self-mythologizing theology of its leader.
