You Are Invited to a Hungarian Revolution Commemoration Social

Chicago: [Rebel Worker Group], [1965]. A hand-drawn, mimeographed flyer for the Rebel Worker group’s commemoration of the ninth anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, held at the IWW’s national headquarters in Chicago on October 23, 1965. Featuring films, speakers, and a social gathering, the event reflected the group’s particular understanding of the uprising as a workers’ revolution against Stalinist bureaucracy, exemplified by the formation of autonomous factory councils and general strikes. Promoting Solidarity Bookshop at the foot, the flyer documents the group’s effort to unite Wobbly labor traditions, anarchist and council-communist theory, and the imaginative graphic language that would soon characterize the Chicago Surrealist Group.
