"Protect To White Labor and Home Industries" - "No More Chinese" - Regular Democratic Ticket, 44th Assembly District
[San Francisco]: [1888]. A ticket listing the 62 candidates for San Francisco's 44th Assembly district under the slogan "Protection to White Labor and Home Industries, No More Chinese." A small illustration depicts a white woman sitting in front of a hearth pointing at a group of Chinese immigrants looking in her door frame. Although the Chinese Exclusion Act had been passed six years earlier (1882), the San Francisco Democratic Party still campaigned on a platform of protecting jobs from Chinese immigrants. This anti-Chinese sentiment arose in the late 1870s and was spearheaded by figures such as Denis Kearney of the Workingmen's Party of California.
