The National Taxpayers Party

[Waukegan, Illinois?]: [National Taxpayers Party], [1931]. A broadside outlining the political purpose and 15-point platform of the short-lived National Taxpayers Party, whose main planks included the "encouragement of home ownership through a more practical system of taxation; a more sensible interpretation of the 18th amendment; and to help World War veterans get full payment on their bonus as well as pensions for those unable to earn a living." The party advocated repealing prohibition and to offset the loss of revenue from persona property taxes by "increasing the Federal Income Tax on large incomes, increasing the inheritance tax on large inheritances, and by a Federal revenue or sales tax, on luxuries and securities, etc.

Although there were multiple "taxpayers parties" founded during the 1930s when constituents were exasperated by the political and economic solutions of the two-party system, this particular party was founded in October, 1931 in Waukegan, Illinois and seems to have only lasted for a year or less. This copy bears the faded signature of "temporary chairman" and Waukegan assistant supervisor Charles O. Jones .
