Gerrit Smith and the Vigilant Association of the City of New-York
New York: John A. Gray, Printer, 1860. A pamphlet related to the libel suit filed by the New York abolitionist, social reformer and philanthropist, Gerrit Smith, against the Vigilant Association, a group of Northern Democrats and Buchanan supporters who falsely claimed that Smith had inspired John Brown's attack at Harper's Ferry through a 1858 manifesto, Plan for the Abolition of Slavery, which had actually been written by Lysander Spooner. Smith sued the Vigilant Association and retained Spooner as his chief lawyer (!). Included in this pamphlet is correspondence related to the suit followed by an 18-page appendix commenting on the case, which includes Smith's lengthy address before the New York State Abolition Convention in January, 1842, in which he outlines his strong anti-slavery stance.
