The Fifth Column
Chicago: American Vigilant Intelligence Federation, 1940. In this address before the Racquet Club American Vigilant Intelligence Federation founder Harry A. Jung describes the Communist fifth column in the U.S. consisting of radical labor leaders, progressive academics, labor secretary Frances Perkins, internationalists, organizations such as the Spanish Refugee Relief Association, ACLU, Federal Council of Churches, and many other subversives.
Jung's American Vigilant Intelligence Federation was a dubious investigative body that compiled files on subversive individuals and organizations, which were then sold to concerned industrialists. Jung edited a newsletter called Vigilance that Donald Strong described as “present[ing] ‘radical’ trends in such a menacing light that its readers will be kept in constant state of delirium tremens” (Organized Anti-Semitism in America, p. 51).
