Tuesday's Child (9 issues)
Hollywood: Tuesday's Child, 1970. A scarce run of this short-lived underground newspaper published in Los Angeles from November 1969 through April 1970. The paper was founded by Los Angeles Free Press contributor Jerry Applebaum, Alex Apostolides, and a group of Freep staffers who left the paper over disagreements with Freep publisher Art Kunkin. The paper was sometimes edited by poet, novelist and journalist Chester Anderson of Beatitude, Underhound, and Crawdaddy fame.
The paper included the standard New Left fare concerning the Black Panthers, women's liberation, ecology, underground comix, etc., but distinguished itself by also focusing on the occult, the burgeoning gay liberation movement, and Charles Manson who was arrested weeks before the first issue went to press. Two of the issues - one of which is included in this run - featured Manson to the cover, with the one included here designating him "Man of the Year." Other notable content includes Carl Wittman's lengthy titled, "A Gay Perspective," in which he outlines the prerequisites for gay liberation, Don Jackson's Gay Briefs column, the work of Aleister Crowley, an article on Demonology focused on three conspiratorial right wing figures: Dan Smoot, Mary Davison, and Emmanuel Josephson, installments of Jerry Rubin's Do It,
A compilation of volume one was published decades later by Inpatient Press (2020), but issues don't surface too often in the trade, less so runs like this one. 22 issues were ultimately published, so we're offering just over a third. These include Vol. 1, Nos. 8, 9; Vol. 2, Nos. 2, 5, 10-14 (final issue).
Tabloid format printed in black on newsprint, 12-20 pp., illustrated. Six of the nine issues have different size mailing labels to the Wisconsin State Historical Society; the Manson cover issue has a celophane tape repair to the fore edge; otherwise a near fine run. Item #14525
