An information packet from the Robin Hood Relearning Company
New York: The Robin Hood Relearning Company, 1969. The Robin Hood Relearning Company was an alternative education consulting and training group founded in the spring of 1969 by Centers for Change (CFC). CFC emerged from the short-lived IF...THEN group established by City of College New York professor, Fred Newman, who would go on to found the New Alliance Party. Robin Hood’s primary client was the New World School, another CFC initiative, which quickly collapsed. One of the primary organizers of all of these endeavors was Hazel Daren, who became a key figure in the 1973 alliance between CFC and Lyndon LaRouche’s Labor Committees. Daren also worked with the small Maoist sect, Class War, led by Jonathan Leake. An under-researched organization from one of the more interesting periods of radical left history that has been largely neglected by scholars.
The packet includes a cover sheet featuring a long Mark Twain excerpt; an announcement of the fall term catalogue; a hand-drawn map showing the Robin Hood Relearning Company, Centers for Change, and the Basement Coffee Shop; two cut-and-paste flyers featuring slogans and graphics; a three-page press release/open letter from Hazel Daren concerning Robin Hood’s mission, costs, a description of the school’s various groups (morality, political, language, and consultation), registration schedule, etc.; a blank registration form; and a poem by Otto Rene Castillo called “The Apolitical Intellectuals.”
