[A racist flyer from the Pennsylvania Vigilance Committee]
Reading, PA: Pennsylvania Vigilance Committee, [1968]. A flyer issued by controversial Ku Klux Klan Grand Dragon, American Nazi Party member, and government informant, Roy E. Frankhouser, following the raper and murder of a white nurse from Reading, PA, named Patricia M. Sholley at the hands of a black former orderly named Maurice Talley. Talley, who’d already served a sentence for rape, abducted Sholley after her shift on December 26, 1967, although her body wouldn’t be found for weeks. He was ultimately convicted of Sholley’s murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Frankhouser, who was from Reading, launched the Pennsylvania Vigilance Committee in response to the “inadequate protection of our citizenry” from black criminals. He references the recent rioting in Watts, Chicago, Detroit, and Newark and recommends that whites arm themselves to defend their homes and families. Regarding Sholley’s murder, Frankhouser avers: “Yes, many such trained and valuable, potential young Mothers, have been brutally raped and murdered by this subhuman scum. Make it perfectly clear to your POLITICIANS, that you demand the death sentence for this worthless nigger, named Talley.”
