Martin Luther King Memorial Bridge - Never

Richmond: Actions-By-Citizens Committee, [1976]. A flyer from a Klan front group protesting the naming of the Martin Luther King Memorial Bridge in Richmond, VA. Along the top is a photograph of King with a hammer & sickle superimposed on his forehead, supporting the long-held contention among right wing groups that King was a Communist. Also included is a reprinted affidavit from FBI counter spy Karl Prussian asserting MLK’s Communist affiliations (a variant of this flyer that we’ve previously sold included the widely circulated photograph of King attending the Communist-affiliated Highlander Folk School). Along the righthand side is the Richmond ordinance designating the naming of the new Leigh Street Bridge as the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bridge.

The innocuously named Action-By-Citizens Committee was a United Klans of America front group founded in 1968 to support George Wallace’s Presidential campaign. During COINTEL operations against the UKA, the Birmingham FBI proposed dissemination of an article titled, “UKA Hides Behind Sheets” which would have exposed the Action By Citizens Committee, but it was ultimately rejected due to the political implications around Wallace’s campaign.
