Amherst: Committee for Collegiate Education of Black Students, [1973]. The second issue of this CCEBS newsletter, which primarily consists of a long “open letter to the black community” from Mike Thelwell, UMass-Amherst professor, SNCC & MFDP activist, and founding chairman of the W.E.B. DuBois Department of Afro-American Studies at UMass-Amherst. In the letter, Thelwell responds to criticism written about him in the Collegian and addresses an ongoing dispute with black students over New Africa House. Other content includes “Notes from CCEBS Staff,” “Notes on Nutrition,” “The Need for Skill Development,” a list of academic and social opportunities for black students, and a review of the Paul Robeson Lecture Series. The Committee for Collegiate Education of Black Students was founded as an outreach organization for black and other Third World students at UMass-Amherst.
