In 1926, the Jewish Anarchist Federation asked Berkman, who was at the time living in France, to write a primer on anarchism that would convey anarchist and anarcho-communist principles to the public while countering some of anarchism's misconceptions. The book was first published in 1929, although sections previously appeared in the Yiddish anarchist newspaper, Freie Arbeiter Stimme. A cheaper, smaller format edition was simultaneously published under the title What Is Communist Anarchism?, with many other editions published since then often under the title The ABC of Anarchism.
