The second volume of poetry by the lawyer and naturalist, Ernest McGaffey (1860-1941), who was a close friend of Edgar Lee Masters and was admired by John Burroughs and Theodore Roosevelt (Hallwas, p. 492). In this copy, McGaffey has written and signed a lengthy poem titled "The Old Gods and the New" to an early blank.
