The Root Is Man: Two Essays in Politics
Alhambra, California: The Cunningham Press, 1953. Two seminal essays, revised and expanded, by "renegade Marxist"-turned-anarcho-pacifist Dwight Macdonald that were originally published in his magazine Politics. Professor Henry Gonshak described "The Root Is Man" as Macdonald's most important political essay, in which he "eloquently expressed the unwavering cornerstore of of his moral and political philosophy: that the only worthwhile government was one devoted to the good not of the state, but of the individual" (from a review of A Rebel in Defense of Tradition: The Life and Politics of Dwight Macdonald). The second essay, "The Responsibility of Peoples," examines the concept of "war guilt" and whether the peoples of countries that commit war atrocities are to blame.
