Newport Illustrated In a Series of Pen & Pencil Sketches
Newport, R. I. C. E. Hammett, Jr., ©1854. A history of Newport, RI, and its most prominent locations and buildings by the architect, painter, and newspaper editor, George Champlin Mason (1820-1894). Includes many engravings of Mason’s pen & pencil sketches. The book was also published by D. Appleton and we’ve seen reference to that as the first edition, but it seems more likely to us that this edition, which was published by Charles E. Hammett, Jr., was published locally first. It’s certainly less common. Hammett operated a large bookstore, stationery store, and printing operation at the corner of Thames St. and Cotton Court from 1846-1898. Both he and Mason were founders of the Newport Historical Society.
In the original printed wrappers (7 ¼” x 4 ¾”), 110 p., illus. Upper spine paper chipped off, general wear and rubbing to wrapper. A very good copy of a fragile item. Item #11143
