A booklet commemorating the National Women’s Monument in Bloemfontein, South Africa, dedicated to the women who died in Concentration Camps during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). Includes a history of the monument’s conception and construction, the suffering and death of women during the war, and short biographies of three individuals buried at the monument’s base: the last President of the Orange Free State, President Steyn, who spearheaded the monument’s creation; General Christiaan Rudolph de Wet, who fought heroically during the war; and Emily Hobhouse who lived through and then wrote a book called “The Brunt of the War” about the Concentration Camps. Concludes with a 1913 letter sent by Miss Hobhouse from England to friends in Bloemfontein.

Perfect-bound green wrappers (4 ¾” x 7 ”), 57 p., four photographs of the monument, three of Steyn, Wet, and Hobhouse. Some minor wear along the spine, else Near Fine. Item #08205
