Semiten der Wüste unter sich combines firsthand observations of Bedouin life with Ludwig Ferdinand Clauss's theory that every race possesses a distinctive, inherited "style" expressed through behavior, emotion, and culture. Clauss portrays desert Arabs as honorable, deeply religious, and shaped by both the harsh environment of the desert and what he believed to be an enduring Semitic racial character.
The travel and ethnographic portions provide useful historical glimpses into Bedouin society in the early twentieth century, and provides an understanding of the history of racial ideology, German Orientalism, and interwar anthropology.
