A small collection of right wing propaganda printed by John W. Biggert of Memphis, TN

Memphis: J. Biggert, [196-?]. A small collection of propaganda printed and distributed by Memphis right wing propagandist, John W. Biggert (d. 2003). Biggert began printing “patriotic literature” in the 1960s when he became incensed over hippies burning the American flag. He distributed his cards and tracts over the next four decades drawing attention to many right wing causes, but he also led one-man campaigns in the Memphis area against smoking, gun control, the legal system, and even Sears, Roebuck & Co. He was profiled numerous times in Memphis area publications for his impassioned, but largely ineffectual antics. The cards assembled here are early examples of his work, and include:

A 2 ¼” x 4” card on thick stock featuring a wanted poster for Ted Kennedy on recto and lyrics lamenting the death of Mary Jo Kopechne - Ted Kennedy’s passenger in the Chappaquiddick incident - and sung to the tune of “My Darling, Clementine” to verso.

A 2 ¼” x 4” card on thick stock with the New Left slogan, “Hell no - we won’t go” and Biggert’s conservative perspective on the New Left (“New Left: We Are Far from Right”) own of the New Left: Free Pot - Free L.S.D. - Free Sex - Free Syphilis - Free Gonorrhea.” Verso the Ten Protest Commandments of Spiro Agnew.

A 3 ¼” x 5 ½” card on thin stock titled, “Odd Symbols By Odd People” describing the history of the anti-Christ emblem known as the peace symbol.

A 3 ¼” x 5 ½” card on thin stock titled, “45 Commie Goals uncovered by W. Cleon Skousen for the FBI while serving as an assistant to J. Edgar Hoover,” and enumerated as such.

All in Fine condition. Kansas and the Wisconsin Historical Society appear to have examples of his work in OCLC. Item #07231
