[Four items from the inaugural National Conference of Black Social Workers]

[Philadelphia]: [National Conference of Black Social Workers], 1969. The first National Conference of Black Social Workers (later the National Association of Black Social Workers) was held on February 21-23, 1969, at Bright Hope Baptist Church (12th & Columbia Ave.) in, what the New York Times called “the heart of North Philadelphia’s slums.” Featured speakers included Drs. Andrew Billingsley and Alvin Pouissaint who decried the Moynihan Report, which warned of the increasing matriarchal structure of the black family, and called for a Black Renaissance that would foster community development, oppose “anti-blackism” and celebrate the richness of black culture. The theme of the conference was the black family, and conference papers included, “The Development of an Economic and Political Base for the Security and Survival of the Black Family...A Responsibility for Black Social Workers,” “Creative and Aggressive Use of Existing Resources for the Benefit of the Black Family...Initiation and Development of New Resources,” “New Resources for Black Social Work Training… ‘Inside the System’ and ‘Outside the System’,” and “Towards a New Social Theory, Based Upon a Philosophy of Liberation Rather Than Adjustment.” One paper not on the Workshops list included here was “The Strengths of the Black Family” by James M. Garnes of Lincoln Univ., which is included in this collection. An annual conference has been held every year since this first one and “brings scholars, practitioners, and administrators together with conferees in a variety of social work settings to dialogue on social work issues in our communities” (NABSW website).

“The Strengths of the Black Family” article is seven corner-stapled 8 ½” x 11” sheets mimeographed on rectos only, 6 p. + cover sheet. The other documents include one 8 ½” x 11” sheet (pre-registration form) and two 8 ½” x 14” sheets, one landscape all mimeographed on rectos only. Some foxing and grazing to the article; the pre-registration form is blank and has a small piece missing from the bottom left corner with scribbled notes to verso; the revised agenda has areas of heavy offsetting, with closed tears and pieces missing from the top and bottom edges; the workshops sheet is lightly toned with a few small closed tears; a Good only grouping.
