Vappu [May Day], 1940-1943: Amerikan suomalaisten kevätjulkaisu [four issues]

Superior, Wis.: Kustannuskomitea, 1940-43. First edition. 4to.; stapled wrappers (8 ½” x 11” - 1943 issue slightly larger format) with cover illustrations by E. C. Miller, each issue 48 pp, illustrated mostly by photographs. In Finnish. Very light wear to wrappers; the 1942 issue has a mark of soiling to the front and rear wrappers; but all issues VG to Near Fine. Of the six institutions holding any issues in WorldCat, only Stanford and the Minnesota Historical Society appear to have a significant runs.

A small run of the Finnish socialist annual published each May Day from 1905 until the 1960s. First published in Astoria, Oregon, which boasted the largest Finnish population west of the Mississippi, Vappu was one of a number of publications issued by the Finnish Socialist Federation, the Finnish section of the Socialist Party of America. Content was designed to appeal to working class U.S. Finns and includes articles on labor and socialism, U.S. history and travel, poetry, and with some international coverage of the war. Item #06614
