The Nascent Marxist-Christian Dialogue: 1961 - 1967 - A Bibliography (Bibliographical Series No. 5)

[New York: American Institute for Marxist Studies], 1968. First edition. 4to; side-stapled, mimeographed wrappers, 27 pp. Wrappers age-toned with a couple of edge nicks; rear cover upside-down. About Near Fine. Scarce in commerce.

“This bibliography attempts to bring together the now rather considerable literature on [the Marxist-Christian] dialogue published between 1961-1967, in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. This was the nascent period of the dialogue, when the two traditionally and ideologically hostile parties were brought closer together largely through the influence of Pope John XXIII, first through his social encyclical, Mater et Magistra (1961), and later by his superb Pacem in Terris (1963). Although earlier attempts at dialogue, including such enthusiastic efforts as the “outstretched hand” in the 1930’s of Maurice Thorez, the French Communist, were abortive, Pope John XXIII’s persistent encouragement of dialogue secured continuing confrontations” (from the Preface).
