Superior Men: A Book of Reason for the Man of Vision. James Hervey JOHNSON.

Superior Men: A Book of Reason for the Man of Vision

San Diego: Published by the author, 1949. First edition. 12mo.; green, stapled wrappers; 192 pp. Before the New Atheists were the ‘Old Atheists’, freethinkers and militant atheists such as Robert G. Ingersoll, Joseph McCabe, and James Hervey Johnson. Johnson’s Superior Men was self-published in 1949 and attacks the major religions and their teachings while promoting a new breed of ‘superior men’ who use reason, science and facts. The final third of the book is a section entitled, “How Religious People Develop Into Superior Men” and reprints testimonials from previously religious individuals who have “converted” to atheism. One such testimony is from Victor Yarros, the one-time anarchist and co-editor of Benjamin Tucker’s “Liberty” who would later repudiate anarchism for social democracy. Johnson later took over the long-running Truth Seeker publication/company from his friend, Charles Smith, and ran it until his death in 1988. Some toning to wrapper edges, cheap paper browning, but otherwise an unread copy. An uncommon title. Item #06067
