The Fine Old Hebrew Gentleman

London: T. Werner Laurie Ltd., [1922]. First edition. 12mo.; red cloth lettered in black, 160 pp. Although he claims at the outset, “I am not one of those who see a Jew in every bush,” the British journalist and poet, Thomas William Hodgson Crosland, sees them everywhere in British society and has nary a complimentary word. He invokes the Protocols, the Talmud, Israel Zangwill, the Marconi Scandal, Jewish Bolshevism, etc. to argue that the Jew is indeed an unscrupulous menace. The British Jewish community complained to the press concerning Crosland’s depiction and the ever-litigious Crosland considered suing for libel. Still, the book was allegedly suppressed and it does not appear on his Wikipedia bibliography. Cloth is spotted and soiled with some unfortunate grazing along the top rear board edge; rubberstamp of ‘Le Service Secret Universel’ to front pastedown with some foxing to the first couple of leaves; underling and marginalia. Good. Item #05248
