Penal Colony, Nov. 1971

Amherst: The Emergency Defense Committee, 1971. First edition. Tabloid newspaper format printed in black on newsprint; 8 pp.; illus. This appears to be a one-off publication by a Univ. of Mass. student group called 'The Committee on Poverty' for the Emergency Defense Committee at the Black Cultural Center. The author's contend that poor people of color are the overlooked "poltical prisoners" due to the systemic inequalities of wealth distrubution and the corresponding inequalities related to judicial processes and sentencing. The last page features the list of all 28 prisoner demands from the Attica uprising. Scarce. We find no copies in the trade and no record in WorldCat. We do find copies at the Univ. of Wisconsin and in the Marshall Bloom Alternative Press Collection at Amherst College. Some toning, else Fine. Item #05102
