Debutantes of 1952

New York: New York Amsterdam News, 1952. First edition. 4to.; stapled, illustrated wrappers; [52] pp., illus. A scarce program for the third annual Debutantes Ball, a high society Negro cotillion sponsored by the “New York Amsterdam News” and held on December 28, 1952 at NYC’s 369th Armory. The NAACP’s Roy Wilkins was the 1952 Chairman and “Jet” magazine noted standouts for this year included the first twins, Jean and Janet Moorehead, daughters of Virgin Islands health commissioner, John S. Moorehead. Photographs of each candidate and the committee chair(wo)men. Adverts from local black businesses comprise the rest of the content, including one from two-time featherweight world champion and uncle to Grandmaster Flash, Sandy Saddler, and from baseball great, Roy Campanella’s, wine and liquor business. Small piece missing from the bottom of the first page and the faintest evidence of some dampstaining to the right margins, but overall VG. We find one copy at the NYPL in WorldCat. Scarce thus.
