The Prison Chaplaincy, and Its Experiences
Concord, N. H.: D. L. Guernsey, 1873. First edition. Octavo. Brown cloth with gilt-titled spine; vi, [1], 8-198 pp. Rev. Quinby's experiences as chaplain of the New Hampshire State Prison from 1869 until his dismissal in 1871. Although he accepted the position reluctantly, he quickly became deeply involved in his work and in the broader movement of prison reform and attended the National Prison Reform Congress in 1870. He organizes the book into two sections: "Under the Reformatory System" and "Under the Punitive and Money-Making System" and clearly advocates for the former. Some soiling to cloth and some dampstaining visible to the top margin, although not affecting text. Very Good overall. Uncommon in commerce, with just over a dozen copies found institutionally via WorldCat. Item #03364
