London and Glasgow: Art and Educational Publishers Ltd., 1948. First edition. 12mo. Green cloth, silver-stamped spine. The last novel written by East End chronicler and Jewish proletariat writer, Willy Goldman (1910-2009), best known for his autobiographical East End My Cradle. This copy owned by Morris Schappes (1907-2004), one-time Communist Party member and long-time editor of Jewish Currents. Goldman, who joined the Young Communists in his youth, became disillusioned with communism long before Schappes did, but neither man ever strayed too far from their secular, Jewish-Marxist heritage. Although there is no documenting evidence to suggest the men knew each other or corresponded, a nice association item nonetheless. A Fine book with Schappes name penned to the front pastedown and gift notation at lower hinge in a Very Good, unclipped dust jacket, which is rubbed and beginning to split at rear flap fold and with some chipping at spine ends.
