(Woman's Christian Temperance Union) Convention, Baltimore, Md. Very good condition with some faint toning; a few closed tears along horizontal fold. The author was a U.S. Navy Rear Admiral who served with valor in the Spanish-American War; a Democratic U.S. Representative from Alabama; and "The Father of American Prohibition," writing numerous books on the perils of alcohol and drugs. "Give alcohol to the Indian, and in a very short time you will turn a peaceable Indian into a savage. Those who have watched the effect of alcohol poison upon a black man, will find it will takes incredibly short time to blot out all the results of evolution since he has been in civilization and put him a level of cannibalism. Take the noblest specimens of the white man and watch the debilitating effect of alcohol." This may be the same speech he gave to the House of Representatives in 1911.
